IMPORTANT CHANGES AT CAMP VALOR

Camp Valor 2008 promises to be another exciting adventure – our theme is superheroes. The fun and education filled days are July 29 through August 1, 2008. Mark your calendar now.

In order to insure Camp Valor remains a memorable and manageable event for each camper, Counselor Associate (CA), and adult volunteer, please be aware of the following:

SIZE LIMITATION
Camp Valor 2007 was a wonderful success with campers and CAs sharing a fun and positive experience. However, the potentially very large number of campers and CAs for 2008 can tax the limits of the camp facilities, our activities, meals, transportation, and our adult volunteers. Consequently, the campers and CAs in 2008 will be limited so that we can maintain our ability to provide a high quality experience. We must therefore strictly enforce bleeding disorder and age requirements.

CAMPERS
Similar to Utah public school requirements, campers with a diagnosed bleeding disorder must be at least 8, but no older than 13 years old, on September 1, 2008 – NO EXCEPTIONS. Often, campers younger than 8 are not mature enough for camp and require excessive supervision to the detriment of other campers. Those ages 15-17 years old may apply to volunteer at camp as a Counselor Associate (CA).

Undiagnosed or unaffected siblings or children of an affected parent must be at least 10, but no older than 11 years old, on September 1st – NO EXCEPTIONS. No cousins, friends or neighbors can be accommodated at Camp Valor.

COUNSELORS ASSOCIATES (CAs)
CAs must be 15, but no older than 17 years-old, on September 1st. 18 year-olds are encouraged to apply as adult volunteers. CAs are counselors, not older campers just wanting to have fun at camp. As there are a limited number of bunks in each cabin, potential CAs are encouraged to submit their applications early.

APPLICATIONS
Camper and CA applications are available at the UHF office and online. Please help us to minimize mailing costs by picking up or downloading the applications. We will mail applications if requested.

A $40 early registration fee ($10 discount) will apply for camper and CA applications received at the UHF office or postmarked by June 1, 2008. The regular $50 registration fee will apply for applications received from June 2nd to June 30th. NO applications will be accepted after June 30, 2008 to allow for finalization of staff and cabin rosters, food, etc. DO NOT send the medical form with the application.

Applications from campers and CAs with a diagnosed bleeding disorder will receive preference in order to maximize our ability to provide camp for those directly affected by bleeding disorders. Limitations must be placed on the number of campers and CAs who are undiagnosed or who are unaffected siblings or children of an affected parent.

The medical form has been simplified and can be completed by a family physician. Please schedule physical exams for campers and CAs early enough to allow completion of the form prior to camp. The medical form must be brought to camp by each camper’s parent/guardian and presented to the Medical Staff on the first day of camp (Monday morning for CAs and Tuesday morning for campers). Campers and CAs will not be allowed in camp without a signed medical form – NO EXCEPTIONS.

CHECK-IN
In addition to the camper check-in at the lodge, a parent or legal guardian must check in campers at the Med Shed on the first day of camp, Tuesday morning – NO EXCEPTIONS. CAs must present their medical form to the Medical Staff on Monday morning (the day of their training). This will insure that the Medical Staff is fully prepared and understands the medical needs of each camper and CA.

Camp Valor cannot be responsible or liable for campers until Tuesday morning at check-in. No Monday check-in of campers will be allowed so staff can concentrate on training and camp setup, and in order to limit liability.

With the prior approval of the Camp Committee Chairman, parents of campers from remote locations or staff members with campers may stay overnight with their children at Camp Valor for a nominal fee on Monday night. Parents must supervise their children. Accommodations are also available in Tooele or Salt Lake City.

These changes are intended to prevent problems while allowing us to provide a safe and memorable camp experience for all.

Thanks,

Becky Ybarra
Camp Valor Committee Chairman
