Utah Hemophilia Foundation

Welcome to the new website of the Utah Hemophilia Foundation. We invite you to discover the programs, networking opportunities, and resources we have to offer.

Mentoring: A Deeper Level of Support

Picture
_The Utah Hemophilia Foundation has long been an advocate of the power of mentoring. Our programming and events are not only geared toward educating and empowering individuals and families with bleeding disorders, they are also designed to help you build a network of friends who are dealing with similar challenges.

Mentoring goes hand and hand with this concept. A mentor is a wise and trusted counselor or supporter. The UHF provides the foundation for these very important relationships. First Step Events and the Parent Resource Group, for example, are just two of the many opportunities we provide for you to create mentoring friendships—whether you are the one being mentored or you are mentoring another person. Voices:  Defying the Odds
by Flavia Lima

Excerpt:  My mom says in almost every family portrait we took over the years, Eric wore either a cast or an arm sling, or was in a wheel chair. And for many years, my mom described Eric to others as being a very active child who always seemed to be getting hurt. She had no idea he was a hemophiliac….Living in São Paulo, Brazil was not easy—much less when my mother had to take my brother up and down the city in multiple hour-long bus rides in order to find a doctor who could help him….When people speak of heroes, I always think of my brother….Although I may not be physically affected by hemophilia, my life has changed because of it. When I was fourteen I received a letter from the Utah Hemophilia Foundation (UHF) inviting me to go to Camp Valor as a Counselor-in-Training (I’m so old school, we were still called CITs back then). My parents dropped me off at the beginning of CIT training into a community in which I had no previous contact with. I knew absolutely no one. Now I look forward each summer to the opportunity I have to go to camp and be surrounded by this amazing community that helped my brother when he most needed it—and welcomed me with open arms. "Ho Ho Ho"-ing at Hollywood Connection

Picture
_Although the holidays are officially over, we have fond memories of jingling all the way and rocking around the Christmas tree at the UHF Holiday Party last December 3rd. About 150 of our closest friends in the bleeding disorders community joined together at Hollywood Connection for skating, golfing, playing, eating laughing and “fun”-ing. The generosity of the community brought in almost $800 through our annual raffle. This money went to support 12 families who needed just a little bit of extra financial help this holiday season. Thanks to everyone who came and made it one of the best activities of the year. Happy 2012 and let’s look to more of the same this upcoming year. Intermountain Hemophilia &
Thrombosis Center (IHTC) News

Picture
_The Intermountain Hemophilia and Thrombosis Clinic (IHTC) is excited to welcome the new year, and wants to wish everyone all the best for 2012. In reviewing the UHF calendar, it looks like many exciting and interesting events are scheduled. We are very proud to be coordinating with the UHF in again presenting the Parents Empowering Parents (PEP) Program in Utah. The dates are March 23-25, 2012, and our event will take place at the Marriott University Park Hotel, located at the University Research Park. This is a great opportunity for parents to commit to a weekend together with other parents to focus on learning more about parenting children with bleeding disorders, as well as build skills in child development, discipline, behavior management, self esteem, communication, and conflict resolution.
