In the 12 years that my son Isaac as been receiving care through Primary Children’s Hemophilia Treatment Center, Heidi Lane’s excellence has always stood out. Her demeanor. Her professional ability. Her obvious care for Isaac and for our family. Her insightfulness. From the perspectives of physical therapy treatment, collaborative care, and wellness guidance, Heidi has always been extraordinary.

I know this is the experience that many of us in the bleeding disorders community share. I don’t know if many know the two awards of distinction that Heidi received from NHF during the last year. It’s worth some reminiscing and collective appreciation again.

The first was NHF’s Physical Therapy Excellence Fellowship, a $10,000 research grant. This is an award subjected to a rigorous peer review process, with applications critiqued on scientific merit and relevance to NHF research priorities. The intent of Heidi’s study was to provide FVIII/FIX deficiency patients with a better sense of their expected outcomes following ankle fusion, based on data gathered from the bleeding disorders community via the Universal Data Collection Project.

The second was NHF’s Physical Therapist of the Year Award for 2008/2009. It is and award of excellence for demonstrated service to the bleeding disorders community above and beyond daily responsibilities. It is awarded to role models for others in the field.

I asked Heidi what these awards meant to her. As always, her response was gracious and centered on her patients. “I’m flattered to be nominated. It is really nice to be recognized. My hope is that this research helps the patients. I really enjoy working with our patients and families.”

Thank you again, Heidi, for your work, dedication, and friendship in this community.
