Voices: My Journey by Lana Henrie
Excerpt: Growing up in Annabella, a small town in central Utah, I not only didn’t know of anyone who had hemophilia, but I had never even heard of this disorder. The first time I ever heard the term “hemophilia” was when our son was diagnosed at six months of age. Since that time, hemophilia has played a significant role in our family’s life. All of the questions, bewilderment—and, yes, devastation—followed as we learned about the strange and complicated journey we would now be embarking on.(read more…)
Climb on Over to the UHF Teen Dine & Dialogue at Momentum Climbing Gym
Save the date for February 17th, the Utah Hemophilia Foundation will be hosting a special Teen Dine & Dialogue, sponsored by Bayer HealthCare, at Momentum Climbing Gym in Sandy. The presentation is entitled, “Living Fit! A Joint Effort.” This program is designed to promote fitness and healthy lifestyles and will feature Heidi Lane, a physical therapist specializing in bleeding disorders who works at Primary Children's Medical Center. Oh, wait—what we really meant to say was our First Step meeting was AT the zoo! On a GORGEOUS Fall Saturday last November, about thirteen families—with little ones with bleeding disorders—met at This is the Place State Park for networking, lunching, and having fun. We were treated to an introduction of the First Step Program by our “Super Moms” (and one Dad): Kristy Fowler, Krisdee Nelson and Derek Nelson. During group introductions, parents were able to share their top concerns for their family and/or children in dealing with a bleeding disorder (for a list of these concerns, please view to complete article by clicking here). Team members from the IHTC were also available to meet and connect with families. The fun continued after a catered lunch when families headed across the street for a trip through Hogle Zoo. From the IHTC: We've Heard You and Are Working to Improve Both Your Access to Care and to Provide You Highest Value Care Possible
To better meet the needs of our patients and families with bleeding disorders, the IHTC at Primary Children’s Medical Center partnered with the UHF to conduct focus groups during the Adult Retreat last fall. The consumers were grouped into one of three focus groups: von Willebrand disease, adult hemophilia, or families of pediatric patients. To maintain confidentiality and anonymity, the results of the focus group were compiled and summarized for the IHTC by the research department at Intermountain. Focus group participants explored perceptions of the Intermountain Hemophilia and Thrombosis Treatment Center (IHTC). Both IHTC relative limitations and patient expectations were discussed.
